I Tried Flappy’s Fried Chicken at Melbourne Central.

Flappy’s Fried Chicken, Melbourne Central

Flappy’s Fried Chicken recently opened at Melbourne Central and I decided to check it out. Here’s my honest take.

Finding It

Before I even get to the food, finding the place was its own adventure. Their Instagram post didn’t make the location within the centre clear enough, and Melbourne Central’s directory didn’t have it listed at all. I ended up wandering around longer than I should have. I’ve since reached out to Melbourne Central management to ask if they can get it added to the directory, so hopefully future visitors have an easier time than I did.

First Impressions

Once I found it, the restaurant was pretty clean. It was loud and busy, but honestly that’s expected for a new spot still building its reputation. Flappy’s focuses on Louisiana-style fried chicken, which sets the tone for the whole menu.

What I Ordered

I went with the Two Tender Signature Combo, which came to $23. For my side I couldn’t really decide, so I just grabbed an extra piece of toast. The combo came with two tenders, two pieces of toast, chips, and their signature sauce, with a lemonade to drink.

(Quick note for international readers: in Australia, lemonade is a lemon-lime soda similar to Sprite. In America it’s more of a lemon squash style drink, closer to Solo.)

My order took somewhere between 10 and 15 minutes, which is fair enough for a busy new restaurant.

The Food

The tenders were the highlight. Dipped in the signature sauce they were pretty good. The chips were decent too, nothing to complain about. The bread didn’t really do it for me, and I wasn’t a fan of the lemonade either. The portion size was generous, probably a bit too much for me if I’m being honest.

Overall

It was a decent first visit. The staff were friendly, the place was clean, and the tenders with the sauce were good. Whether I’d go back, I’m honestly not sure yet. If you’re a fried chicken fan it’s probably worth trying at least once, especially as they settle in and find their feet at Melbourne Central.
